Most public school districts aren't facing Jackson's growth problems. Throughout the region, it is private schools that boast strong and steady growth.

Nationwide trends show a 450 percent enrollment in Catholic school enrollment from 1982. The trend has been borne out in Southeast Missouri. Growth has required plans for a new Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau.

Parents have embraced smaller classes and individualized attention in an atmosphere where prayer is not only allowed, but encouraged. Other private schools in the region have prospered as well.

Politicians should take heed of this national trend. Parents want a voice in school choice. One day soon, the country must address this issue.
