James R. Adams, president and chief executive officer of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., will speak at the annual Copper Dome Society dinner May 30 at Southeast Missouri State University.

The dinner, which recognizes donors to the Southeast Missouri University Foundation, is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Show Me Center. The dinner will be preceded by a social period, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Southwestern Bell Telephone, a subsidiary of Southwestern Bell Corp., provides a variety of telecommunications services to nearly 9 million customers in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Adams has held several positions with Southwestern Bell and AT&T in Texas, Missouri, Kansas, New Jersey and New York. In 1980, he became vice president of Missouri operations.

In 1981, he returned to AT&T, where he became executive vice president of AT&T Technologies. In 1984, he moved to Dallas to become president of the Texas division of Southwestern Bell Telephone.

Adams was appointed to his current position in St. Louis in 1988. As president and chief executive officer, he is responsible for all of the company's telephone operations.

He joined Southwestern Bell in 1965 after graduating from Texas A&M University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in math and physics. He later earned a master of business administration degree in statistics and business finance from the University of Texas-Austin.

Adams and his wife, Judy, are the parents of two daughters and a son.
