SIKESTON, Mo. -- Lewis Brothers Bakery, producer of Bunny Bread products, announced Friday it is closing its Sikeston plant, located on Kendall Street off Malone Avenue.
Sikeston Mayor Josh Bill said the closure means the loss of 110 jobs. The bakery opened in 1953.
"This is certainly horrible for the folks who lost their jobs today, but the city is working to place them in other positions," Bill said.
He said a press release from the company indicated Lewis Brothers had to close one of its bakeries because Americans are adopting lower carbohydrate diets and are eating less bread.
