PUXICO -- A 38-year-old Puxico man was critically injured early Wednesday in what appears to have been an accidental shooting, Stoddard County authorities said.

Gary Hargraves suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported by LifeBeat helicopter to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, where he was reported in critical condition.

A Stoddard County Sheriff's Department spokesman said the department received a call at 1:52 a.m. Wednesday from ambulance personnel, who responded to a call at the home of a friend of Hargraves in Puxico.

The sheriff's department spokesman said the incident, involving a .22-caliber rifle, apparently occurred along Highway 51.

Authorities said Hargraves' friend apparently transported him to the house.

As of Wednesday night, the incident remained under investigation.
