CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Jeanne Livers, a scientific analyst-programmer in Southeast Missouri State University's Computer Center, has been elected chairperson of the university's Professional Staff Council.

The council is the representative organization of about 120 professional staff members at the university. The council has 11 members and four alternates.

"I just want to be more involved on campus and help be a voice for members of the professional staff," Livers said. "I hope I can help make a few things happen."

At the top of that agenda will be an effort to seek higher salaries for professional staff, she said.

"We need to get salaries more in line with what we think is fair while keeping in mind that this may not be a good year that the funding may just not be there," said Livers.

"We probably won't get what we've asked for," she said, referring to a pay scale proposal that the council submitted to the University Budget Committee for review.

"I don't mean to be pessimistic," she said. "I'm just being realistic."

Livers, who replaces Annette Adams, whose term expired earlier this month, will serve a one-year term as chairperson. Livers' term began last month.

Livers returned to Southeast Missouri State last June after teaching eighth-grade mathematics at Central Junior High School during the 1989-90 school year. She currently assists faculty and staff with statistical analyses and plans and conducts computer workshops.

She previously served six years as an instructor in the university's computer science department.

Livers graduated from Southeast Missouri State in 1987 with a master of arts degree in teaching. She previously graduated summa cum laude twice from Southeast, with a bachelor's degree in computer science in 1985 and a bachelor's degree in secondary education in 1980.

She is a 1976 graduate of Central High School.

Livers and her husband, Daniel, are the parents of a 5-year-old daughter, Danielle.
