A Cape Girardeau man has filed for Cape Girardeau County public administrator on the Democratic ticket.
Mike Hurst, who has worked for the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Public Safety for the past four years, said Friday that he is running for the position because "there is nothing more satisfying than helping people."
"The public administrator needs to be a compassionate, caring person," said Hurst. The administrator must be trusted to oversee other people's money and properties as ordered by the courts, he said.
"The public administrator is a good job. It is a very rewarding job where you not only make a decent living, but you are able to help people who cannot handle their own affairs," said Hurst.
If elected, Hurst said he would quit his university job and work full time as public administrator.
Hurst previously worked for an ambulance service. For 16 years, he worked for the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department. He served as jail administrator for the county for 10 years.
He was born and raised in Cape Girardeau County. He and his wife, Florence, have lived in Cape Girardeau for 32 years. They have a daughter.
