On New Year's Day, police arrested a 20-year-old Thebes, Ill., man they say hours earlier fatally shot a 25-year-old Cape Girardeau man. The shooting occurred outside the Taste, an after-hours club at 402 Good Hope in a Cape Girardeau neighborhood that has been plagued by violence for years.
The alleged shooter's name will be released once charges have been filed, police said Thursday night.
Anton Shamon Miller of 411 S. Frederick, formerly of Chicago, was shot several times at 3:49 a.m. as he was fighting with another man in front of the Taste, police said.
Patrick Buck, who operates the after-hours club, said a third man got out of a car and shot Miller. "The dude walked up and shot him in the back just like a coward," said Buck, who witnessed the shooting.
Buck said the shooter and the other man in the fight both fled.
Cape Girardeau police Capt. Carl Kinnison said Miller apparently was shot with a semi-automatic handgun. Late Thursday, police hadn't recovered the weapon.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner Mike Hurst said Miller was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:38 a.m.
An autopsy is scheduled for today in Farmington, Mo.

Kinnison said the suspect will be charged with murder. He was being held Thursday night in the Cape Girardeau police station jail.
The arrest followed hours of investigation early New Year's Day by abut 25 to 30 officers with the Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties Major Case Squad.
Lt. David James, Major Case Squad commander with the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, said the shooting grew out of a dispute between the victim and the other two men.
He said there was "bad blood, passion and alcohol involved."
Police confiscated a blue Corvette a few blocks from the Taste about two hours after the shooting. Police believe the car had been driven by the shooter.
Kinnison said less than half a dozen people were outside the Taste at the time of the shooting.
