Missouri Gov. John Ashcroft has appointed Scott D. Giles, a student from Jefferson City, as the new student regent at Southeast Missouri State University.
He will serve as a non-voting member on the Board of Regents until Jan. 1, 1994.
The appointment was announced Wednesday. Giles will succeed Steve Nenninger, whose term as student regent recently expired.
"I am really excited about the appointment," said Giles, a 20-year-old sophomore. "It has been a goal of mine."
Giles said he believes a student regent should actively represent student interests.
Giles serves on the university's Student Advisory Council, which involves student leaders and serves as a forum for discussing university issues.
He is currently serving as a student assistant in the university president's office.
Giles said that working in the president's office has been beneficial. "I think it was helpful to me to get that kind of an education as to how the university works, and the opportunity to meet a lot of people."
Giles is a graduate of Jefferson City High School, where he took college preparatory courses with an emphasis in social studies and business. He is majoring in political science and accounting.
