JACKSON -- Cape Girardeau County voters rejected a statewide riverboat gambling measure Tuesday.

Voter turnout was 45 percent, with 15,058 of the county's 33,154 registered voters going to the polls in Tuesday's municipal elections.

The statewide constitutional amendment on riverboat gambling was defeated by a 57 to 43 percent margin in the county, 8,168 against to 6,260 for.

Voters in the Millersville Fire District authorized a maximum operational levy of 30 cents by a vote of 359 to 198.

John Holcomb was elected to the Cape Special Road District board. He had 3,721 votes to 3,427 for F.R. "Rock" Wilferth and 1,649 for Don McAnally.

In the Delta school board race, Martha Nothdurft was re-elected. Also elected was George Cox. Nothdurft had 255 votes; Cox, 199; Robert Goehman, 110; Dave White, 108; Aaron Altenthal, 58; and Erie Foster, 54.

In the city election, Paul Evans, Beverly Hefner and Hughes Lesch were unopposed for respective posts of mayor, city collector, and Ward 1 alderman. No candidate filed for the Ward 2 post.

Dennis Koeberl defeated Paul Engelhart for a seat on the Fruitland fire department board of directors. The vote was 419 to 360.

In several towns, there were no municipal races. In Gordonville, voters elected Ronnie Randol, Ron Badger, Harold Ringwald, Lloyd Brad Hutson and Ronald Eftink.

In Whitewater, Doyle Eakins, Marilyn Cries and James Rex Haynes were elected to the board of trustees.

In the Oak Ridge school board election, voters re-elected Richard Baer and Stephen Schonhoff.

Voters re-elected Charles Roberts and Dwayne Kirchhoff to the Nell Holcomb school board.

In Allenville, voters elected Freda Lesch to the town board.
