Two area educators will be honored homecoming weekend at Southeast Missouri State University.

Fred Janzow, Southeast associate professor of biology, will be honored as the winner of the 1991 Faculty Merit Award. Meanwhile, Grace Hoover, retired chairperson of Southeast's environmental studies department, will receive the 1991 Alumni Merit Award presented by the university's College of Health and Human Services.

Janzow, Hoover, and five other graduates receiving Southeast's Alumni Merit Award will be honored at a Merit Award dinner Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Show Me Center. The dinner is open to the public. Cost of the dinner is $12.

"These awards are very important to us as a university, because any time we honor our faculty and alumni, we honor the university," said Jane Stacy, alumni services director.

Stacy said Janzow and Hoover "have brought distinction to themselves and the university."

Born in Thief River Falls, Minn., Janzow earned a bachelor's degree from Concordia Teachers College and master's and doctoral degrees from Oklahoma State University. He joined Southeast in 1975 when the institution changed from a state college to a regional university.

Janzow teaches biology and university studies courses and is the coordinator of the freshman year experience program that is part of university studies. He also is a former chairman and vice chairman of the Faculty Senate and has served on several university committees.

Hoover joined Southeast as a full-time faculty member in 1962. She retired last year after nearly 30 years of service to the institution. She was appointed acting head of the home economics department in 1965 and subsequently served as permanent chairperson of the department.

As head of the department (later renamed as environmental studies). Hoover was instrumental in establishing a number of programs at the university, including the Center for Aging and Gerontology Studies and a campus day-care program for the elderly called the Southeast Missouri Eldercare Center.

"I think it is a great honor," Hoover said of the award. "I have maintained a very unique relationship with Southeast over the past 28 years in that the university continued to provide educational opportunities during my professional years."

Said Hoover, "When I think of the university, I have a feeling of warmth and pride for the institution."

Persons interested in attending the Merit Award dinner can make reservations by contacting Stacy at 651-2259.
