Flag Day a reminder of freedom, the men and women who serve

Saturday is nationally recognized as Flag Day, an occasion set aside to recognize the stars and stripes that make America's flag.

According to usflag.org, the first idea for this day began in 1885. A schoolteacher invited his students to recognize June 14 as Flag Day. The timing coincided with the anniversary of the flag's adoption.

President Woodrow Wilsons established via proclamation the day on May 30, 1916. President Harry Truman, on Aug. 3, 1949, signed an Act of Congress to designate June 14 as National Flag Day.

The flag reminds us of the men and women who have laid down their lives to help keep this nation free. It stands for liberty. It's a reminder of the divine providence, of One Nation Under God.

In past years the Cape County Park has been lined with flags. Other times during the year, including Memorial Day and July 4, the flags also are posted. This, along with other flag postings by individuals and businesses, is a touching reminder.

As you see flags flying on Saturday, we encourage you stop and think about what makes this country great. Thank you to the men and women who stand ready to defend the United States.
