LETTERS: LIBERTY SACRIFICED TO GOD OF SECULAR HUMANISM

To the editor:

According to the news reports regarding the crisis of the Cape LaCroix cross, one is inclined to think that the citizens of Cape Girardeau won a major victory. The cross will stay where it is, and the Freedom From Religion Foundation won't press charges.

In all actuality, the freedom-loving populace hasn't won a victory but has once again sacrificed its liberty to the god of secular humanism.

Avoiding confrontation by compromise is reminiscent of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's 1938 attempt to avert war with Adolph Hitler. The Munich Pact convinced Chamberlain of peace in his generation. One year later the panzers were rolling across Poland. As Hitler well knew, compromise is a sign of weakness and defeat, not of strength and determination.

Where are the men of resolve this nation has been known for? Where are those who stand on principle for what is right? Have we forgotten the conviction of one of our forefathers who declared in the face of compromise, "There is a God who presides over the destinies of nations, and he will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilante, the active, the brave. ... There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! ... Is life so dear, and peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"

It would do us well to remember from whence we came.
