LETTERS: GOLF TOURNEY HELPS VETERANS HOME

To the editor:

Our third annual Flag Day Memorial Benefit Golf Tournament raised $17,603.36 for the Missouri Veterans Home perpetual trust. The tournament has now raised nearly $37,000 for this fund to ensure that if present benefactors -- mostly World War II-vintage membership veterans groups -- are no longer active, future generations of resident veterans will have funds for activities, outings, personal needs for indigents and quality-of-life enhancements.

Many, many people deserve thanks for the success of this tournament. Permit me to single out Neal Edwards, tournament chairman for all three years; and tournament committee members Pete Rhodes, Caryn Michel and Walt Wildman of Cape Girardeau; Charlie Hutson, David Moll, Cotton Meyer and David Hitt of Jackson; and Jim Baker of Sikeston.

There are hundreds of hole sponsors, patrons, cart sponsors, players and volunteers. I make special note of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 of Cape Girardeau, a corporate sponsor for three years; American Legion Post 158 of Jackson, a two-year corporate sponsor; and VFW Post 3174 of Sikeston, a corporate sponsor this year.
