Syracuse repeated as Big East Conference champions by beating No. 15 Pittsburgh 65-61 on Saturday night. It was the first time in their record four victories they didn't need late-game heroics from senior guard Gerry McNamara.
It was sophomore Josh Wright who clinched the title win, making four free throws in the final 17 seconds.
Syracuse (23-11) became the lowest-seeded team to win the Big East tournament -- the Orange came in at No. 9 -- and the third school to repeat, joining Georgetown in 1985 and Connecticut in 1999.
Shawne Williams scored 18 points and Joey Dorsey had 10 points and 12 rebounds as Memphis (30-3) won the Conference USA tournament in Memphis, Tenn.
Craig Smith had 23 points and 15 rebounds while 11 Boston College shot 61 percent in the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Tyler Hansbrough, a freshman from Poplar Bluff, Mo., had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the second-seeded Tar Heels (22-7), who had won 11 of 12 coming in.
