Weather predictors say relief is on the way from the nearly 2-week-old, late summer heat wave that has forced educators to shorten the school day for many Southeast Missouri students; a cool front is expected to push into the Cape Girardeau area Friday afternoon or evening.
The Airport Advisory Board has approved a conditional recommendation the city build a new terminal at the municipal airport; the recommendation stipulates the city proceed with the plans to build a new facility, if a tenant can be found for the existing building within the next six months and the project doesn't sacrifice too many other projects outlined in the city's Airport Master Plan.
Labor Day. Many Cape Girardeau residents spend the last summer holiday at barbecues, picnics or family trips; the weather is ideal, and people flock to the various parks in the area; the major event in Cape Girardeau is, as always, the Knights of Columbus picnic, held on the South Spanish Street club grounds.
An estimated 6,500 people, some from as far away as California, toured the dredge Ste. Genevieve yesterday and today; the dredge, tied up at Cape Girardeau for two days, was originally expected to draw about 2,500 visitors.

More than 300 Girardeans are spending the day in Chaffee, Missouri, helping organized labor celebrate Labor Day; about 75 people went down at noon yesterday to visit relatives and friends.
Al Huters on his Indian wins the motorcycle race at the fairgrounds in the afternoon; Albert Mogler, riding an Excelsior, gives Huters a good run for the money, until a tire gives way in the ninth lap; Dr. B.W. Willie, also on an Indian, places third.
