Students swelter in high temperatures, but despite the heat and discomfort, officials say the first day of classes for the Cape Girardeau Public Schools goes smoothly; while classrooms are hot, Superintendent Dr. Arthur Turner noted, "...We really didn't think it was wise to dismiss early on the first day of school."
About 40 residents of southeast Cape Girardeau yesterday marched to the City Council meeting to show support for Councilman Doug Richards' proposal to clean up and fill a blighted section along the abandoned railroad right-of-way that aligns with Fountain Street.
Renovation of the interior having been completed, dedication services at the redecorated Hobbs Chapel on Egypt Mills Road were held recently, with the Rev. George W. Heslar of Farmington, Missouri, bringing the dedication message; the chapel has been transformed from its former appearance by a dropped suspension ceiling, walls paneled in birch, and refinished wainscoting and floors.
John W. Beaudean Jr., a student at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Beaudean of Cape Girardeau, is guest speaker at all three worship services at Trinity Lutheran Church.
