Steady rainfall since about 5 a.m. causes many Cape Girardeau streets and intersections to carry streams of water during the day; a number of cars stall as a result of street conditions in the morning on Broadway.

Mrs. A.L. Freytag of Kennett, Missouri, received her rating yesterday at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport as an instrument pilot; she is the first woman to receive such a rating in training in Cape Girardeau; both she and her husband are pilots and own a Cessna Skymaster plane.

1940

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce board of directors adopts a resolution asking the government to select a site immediately for the new $430,000 federal building; the board pledges itself to work with representatives of the post office department who may be sent here with this end in view.

T.J. Haddock secures a permit to build a frame store building to replace one destroyed by fire at 1001 Perry Ave.; Clarence Shirrell will be contractor of the one-story structure; the fire, which ruined the store operated by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hood, occurred last July.

1915

Cape Girardeau knows how to throw a parade, and last night's "burlesque pageant" had them all beat for genuine entertainment and fun; a tremendous crowd lined the streets to see the parade pass along Broadway, Pacific, Main and Haarig; the floats carried various themes, such as "Movies," with Russell Dearmont dressed as Charlie Chaplain and Julien Friant representing Marie Dressler.

John C. Shoup, a leader in the "dry" forces of the state, was in Cape Girardeau yesterday conferencing with several well-known citizens; but the nature of his visit wasn't revealed.
