Under a plan endorsed by the Southeast Missouri State University's budget committee, tuition at the university would be raised by $5 a credit hour, and textbook rental fees would be hiked from $7 to $9 a course, but the plan doesn't sit well with university students, who were saddled with a tuition hike this fall.
The price of gasoline in Cape Girardeau and surrounding communities has dropped to below $1, well under the national average price per gallon of $1.15. Bob Blank, owner of Bi-State Oil in Cape Girardeau, calls the drop "a normal market fluctuation."
Rainfall ranging from slightly more than an inch to about five inches over the district yesterday and overnight has given everything a good soaking but apparently has caused no damage. The rain does, however, make farmers jittery as it delays the maturing of corn and soybeans.
State College officials are continuing the investigation into an incident Friday night near Gale, Illinois, involving 43 members of an unnamed fraternity. The young men have been charged with disorderly conduct; however, the incident took place on private property, and the youths had permission to use the land, which was located some distance from any home. There was no drinking involved in the incident.
One hundred reservations have been made for the final in a series of five regional conferences on pertinent problems facing education in Missouri to be held this evening at a dinner meeting at the Hotel Marquette under the sponsorship of the policy and plans committee of the Missouri State Teachers Association. Principal speaker will be Dean Irvin F. Coyle of Flat River (Missouri) Junior College.
Eggs in Cape Girardeau are selling from 33 to 35 cents per dozen, and there's an acute shortage at that. One reason for the shortage is the demand of the U.S. Army to feed its young soldiers.
Residents of the little town of Allenville, in the south end of the county, were treated to turtle soup by the town marshal Monday. While running his trot-line, which he had set in Hubble Creek on Sunday, a large, 102-pound turtle was found hanging to one of the hooks. An expert cook was secured to cook a large kettle of soup, and the whole town enjoyed the feast.
Policeman Edward Beeve of the downtown beat sends in his resignation to Mayor Fred A. Kage, effective next Saturday midnight. He plans to leave for St. Louis the next day to take a position as a special agent for the Frisco Railroad.
