Robertson Contractors Inc. of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, submitted the low bid of $1.29 million for the next phase of Cape Girardeau's Lexington Avenue arterial street project; the project will include construction of a signalized intersection of North Kingshighway, Lexington Avenue and Mount Auburn Road and a five-lane bridge over Cape LaCroix Creek.

The St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway Co.'s newest locomotive, the R.T. Hughes, will enable the railroad to expand operations into the winter months; the 80-ton, twin-engine diesel locomotive will begin regular runs late this fall.

An unusual new learning tool will be provided as a public service to the junior and senior high schools of Cape Girardeau during the school year just beginning; it consists of a series of filmstrips correlated with current news happenings and developed by The Missourian in cooperation with The Associated Press and Guidance Associates.

A crowd of 93 senior citizens gathered yesterday for the organizational meeting of a club for people 60 years old and older; following an explanation of opportunities available to them as an organization, the 93 unanimously decided to become a club.

SEMO District Fair manager H.V. Beal declares this year's exposition was a financial success, although not all receipts have been checked and not all expenses met; the total amount for the horse races is $8,549.50.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- One of this community's landmarks, a 65-year-old frame building that housed the Christian Church, long since disbanded, was destroyed by fire yesterday; the blaze, thought to have originated from an oil stove, was used in recent years as a dwelling; occupants were Mr. and Mrs. George Abernathy.

1916

After a delay of more than four months, the work of paving Frederick Street from Broadway to Washington Avenue now is to proceed; at a conference last night between members of the city council's water and light committee, the manager of the water and light plants and several attorneys, the contention was settled without the least trouble; the paving had been delayed by the matter of the placing of fire plugs.

The Brinkopf Furniture and Undertaking Co. of Upper Broadway yesterday received its fine new auto hearse, the first of its kind in Cape Girardeau; the black Meteor Co. hearse has a 45-horsepower, six-cylinder engine and is made to drive the carriage anywhere, whether in the city or country.
