The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded the construction contract for the first phase of the Cape LaCroix Creek-Walker Branch flood-control project to Dumey Excavation of Oran, Missouri, and Brenda Kay Construction of Cape Girardeau.

Two area educators will be honored homecoming weekend at Southeast Missouri State University. Fred Janzow, Southeast associate professor of biology, will be given the 1991 Faculty Merit Award, and Grace Hoover, retired chairperson of Southeast's environmental studies department, will receive the 1991 Alumni Merit Award presented by the university's College of Health and Human Services.

1966

Lt. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey of Washington, D.C., has been named sponsor of the seventh annual Southeast Missouri Council class of Eagle Scouts. The general will be in Cape Girardeau for the court of honor Feb. 19, 1967, at Academic Hall.

Clyde Whaley, Sedgewickville, Missouri, Republican who twice has been defeated by Rep. Frank Ellis of the same community in countywide elections, will face Ellis again in November, this time in a larger district. Whaley, a farmer and businessman, was named GOP candidate for state representative from the 150th District by the district party committee last night.

1941

Moving into "Big Saturday," the SEMO District Fair looks for its peak crowd of the week before the 1941 exposition comes to a close. Today's program finishes up the horse-racing card in the afternoon, while the second of three society horse shows will take place in front of the grandstand in the evening. Music in the evening will be furnished by the Sikeston (Missouri) High School band.

City engineer John R. Walther has issued a building permit for a church, to be built by the Foursquare congregation, at the corner of Bloomfield Street and Park Avenue. Pastor of the church is the Rev. Evelyn Taylor.

1916

The Vogelsang Brothers, contractors, are making quick work of the new Walther building on Broadway. The second floor is finished, and a big crew of mechanics is rushing the work on the main floor. It is hoped the new building and the new stock will be ready for an Oct. 1 opening.

The Cape Girardeau Handle Co., which has been operating in South Cape Girardeau for the past year, is being enlarged. K.A. Brumback, manager of the plant, says the force of employees will be doubled by Oct. 1.
