Withstanding gusting winds and defying impending rains, more than 200 volunteers stood at intersections, in front of stores and at local businesses yesterday morning, hawking newspapers benefiting Youth, Education, Learning and Literacy -- YELL; volunteers in Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City raised more than $19,200, selling newspapers on street corners from 6:30 to 10 a.m.

Chilly weather and the soppy ground don't keep people away from the 138th annual SEMO District Fair, nor do they hamper the Big Bull Chute-Out event in front of the grandstand in the evening; workers were out in force early in the morning getting the fairgrounds back in shape after Tuesday evening's two-inch deluge.

1968

Two services are held in connection with the dedication of the new Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel on West Cape Rock Drive; the pastor, the Rev. Walter C. Loeber, leads the congregation in the rite of dedication in the morning; in the afternoon, a festival service of dedication is held, with the speaker being the Rev. Walter Stuenkel, president of Concordia College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The long-closed road to the high limestone overlook in Trail of Tears State Park is opened in the afternoon for the unveiling of a bronze marker commemorating the 300th anniversary of the voyage of Father Jacques Marquette down the Mississippi River; delivering the dedicatory address is the Rev. John F. Bannon, S.J., chairman of the Department of History, St. Louis University.

1943

It is announced that an intensive scrap metal drive, with iron in particular badly needed for war uses, will be conducted in the state and nation from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15; heading the planning for the drive are H.I. Himmelberger, head of the local industrial salvage committee, and V.A. Kogge, chairman of the Cape Girardeau County general salvage committee.

A deed transferring the former Jackson convent property to Archbishop John J. Glennon by the heirs of W.H. Wessell has been filed in the recorder's office; the brick building on these lots, erected in 1882, will be used as a home for the Sisters of Notre Dame of St. Louis, who will have charge of the parochial school which has an enrollment of 64.

1918

The Rev. R.A. Karraker of Rushville, Illinois, preaches at the Christian Church; he comes at the request of the church board, with a view of taking the pastorate permanently.

Forty-three members of the Presbyterian Church of Cape Girardeau are paid a tribute by their fellow church members, when in an impressive ceremony a service flag is dedicated; among the 43 stars, one is of gold for a member, C.A. Crass, who lost his life recently when his ship was sunk by a German torpedo.
