A monument that has rested for nearly 43 years on South Main Street in memory of slain Cape Girardeau police chief Jeff Hutson will be moved this week to Courthouse Park; Hutson was killed Oct. 7, 1922, in a gun battle with an escaped convict; the marker will be placed beside one commemorating deaths of patrolman Donald H. Crittendon and Auxiliary Policeman Herbert L. Goss on the Courthouse Park lawn near the west side of the courthouse.

The city council was told yesterday the city will stand to lose about $1,000 in federal matching funds for civil-defense purposes, if it doesn't grant a $23 per month salary increase to a civil defense employee here; after expressing some displeasure over the matter, members referred it to the city attorney.

The first entries for the SEMO District Fair are received at the Arena Building; the entries include horses, cattle, hogs and sheep; while more livestock is expected to be registered throughout the week, entries for other departments likely won't be filed until fair week.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- With 35 flying cadets enrolled, a preliminary session of the new Sikeston flying school is held; the students, coming from several states, arrived here during the past three days; the school, known as the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics Inc., is civilian operated, but will serve as a training base for the Army Air Corps.

Better suburban passenger train service for Southeast Missouri and Cape Girardeau especially is initiated by the Frisco Railroad; a new train touches at every point along the Gulf and main lines between Cape Girardeau and Caruthersville, Missouri, arriving here at 10:25 a.m. and leaving in the afternoon at 3:35.

Public schools in Cape Girardeau begin classes with at total of 1,561 pupils attending; last year, the first-day total was 1,403.
