After several years of work to restore the site, the May Greene Garden at Themis and North Fountain streets was dedicated yesterday afternoon; as part of the dedication, many of the people who were active in preserving the garden were recognized for their efforts, including Judy Crow, Jim Logan, Larry Bohnsack and Maxine Davis.

The Cape Girardeau City Council unanimously approves a motion to solicit proposals for use of the city's convention and tourism funds; since the fund's inception, revenue has been used almost exclusively to fund the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau; revenue also has been used to retire the debt on a $5 million bond issue used to fund the Show Me Center.

Lake Girardeau, an angling disappointment to most fishermen this past year during the lake's introduction, may show some improvement next year; this week, fresh stocks of channel cat were added, this preceded by a stock of predator bass.

Members of the Ku Klux Klan, in addition to making an appearance last Saturday at Sikeston, Missouri, apparently made a brief stopover in Cape Girardeau that night; an employee of the Kroger Store in Town Plaza Shopping Center said he found discarded Klan pamphlets that had been placed on vehicles in the parking lot.

The Jackson City Council, at its meeting last night, ordered the lot on the corner of South High and West South streets be purchased from J.W. Daugherty for $2,000; this is to be the site for the new public library; the lot is just opposite First Baptist Church.

Students at Teachers College, checked by a ruling of the Social Life Committee from sending or receiving corsages for college dances, are protesting the move was made without the backing or consent of the student body.

1916

The steamer Cape Girardeau sinks about 3 a.m., five miles above Chester, Illinois; the vessel is a total loss, as is an unusually large cargo of goods of every description; all the passengers and crew members were taken ashore safely; according to Capt. William "Buck" Leyhe, the vessel struck the piling of an old incline, tearing a large hole in the bottom of the boat.

The Walther brothers -- B.A. and G.C. -- hold the formal opening of their magnificent new furniture store, "where Broadway meets Middle"; the new store contains 22,000 square feet of floor space, filled with some of the finest styles in home furnishings.
