Michael Morgan is the Cape Girardeau Fire Department's new mechanic, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Carroll Schaefer in April; in addition, Morgan will serve as the department's public-education officer and its first job-safety officer.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation widens its search for three federal prisoners who wounded a guard and overpowered a U.S. deputy marshal during an escape yesterday leading from the federal prison in Marion, Illinois, to an area in Mississippi County, Missouri; efforts to capture the three have been extended into surrounding states.

Keith Fuller, assistant general manager of The Associated Press, tells of the rewards, responsibilities and hazards of reporting the news before a State College audience; Fuller, who later addresses members of the Southeast Missouri Press Association at a luncheon on the college campus, deals specifically with the war in Vietnam and government efforts to control the news.

1941

The waters of Apple Creek in the north end of Cape Girardeau County are backed up more than nine miles from the Mississippi River on account of the high stage of the river; farmers who have corn crops in the bottoms along Apple Creek have lost a good deal of corn, although an effort has been made to get the barely matured crop out.

Several out-of-town officials of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. are in Cape Girardeau for the formal opening of the company's new supermarket at 19 N. Spanish St.

1916

President Sam Carter of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club returns in the afternoon from a trip to Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, with nine Scott County farmers who went there to purchase the nucleus of a dairy herd of good cattle; 32 head were bought, all 31 Guernseys and one Holstein; the farmers who accompanied Carter were the Rev. C. Moenig, Andrew Dirnberger, Nick Dannenmueller, Andy Heisserer, Jake Seyer, Henry Brockmeyer, Frank Miederhoff, Theon Grojean and Sol. J. Hahn.

The Blue Ribbon Ice & Fuel Co. will move its office from Sprigg Street to its new location on Frederick Street near the tobacco factory some time next week; the office building is completed, and as soon as the scale is installed, it will be ready for business.
