The 8th District Democrats rally in the evening at the Show Me Center; the event draws around 275 people, including Russ Carnahan, the Democratic candidate the 8th District congressional seat, and Connie Hendren, Democratic candidate for state auditor.

BENTON, Mo. -- Eighth District U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson defends his opposition to the recent budget compromise and predicts Congress may draft a new budget package by midweek; the Cape Girardeau Republican is here to take part in an agricultural appreciation rally.

Jackson has been added to the list of locations at which vision tests for drivers license renewals may be taken; Robert E. Rafferty, who will be administering the tests in this area, says he has been directed to be in Jackson all day each Wednesday to administer the tests at the auto license bureau on Main Street.

The Cape Girardeau City Council unanimously approves an ordinance calling for an $880,000 bond issue election to be held Nov. 9 for a major airport improvement project; also at the special session, the council votes to award a contract for the construction of sewers in the west section of the city and hears new opposition to the city's annexation plan.

After worshiping all summer in tent quarters, the Foursquare Gospel Church moves back to its former location, 421a Broadway; pastor of the church is the Rev. Evelyn Taylor.

Ovid M. Mulkey of Cape Girardeau, called to active service with the Navy, will leave tomorrow for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, Illinois; Mulkey retired in 1931 after 17 years in the Navy and, when mustered out, held the rank of chief quartermaster.

1915

Jim Kinder and J.W. Gillingwater have arranged a lease on a new moving picture theater to be built in Haarig by Tony Haas, on the latter's property adjoining the Stehr store on the west; in addition to showing moving pictures, the theater will boast a stage which can accommodate vaudeville shows and dramas.

A.K. Bohannon, who has been operating the dance hall at the fairgrounds all summer, plans to open the Anderson Hall in Haarig Saturday night; he operated the Anderson all last season and made it one of the popular amusement places of the city.
