Two commissioners of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority have been named to new four-year terms by their respective county commissions; the Scott County Commission appointed Morty Potashnick of Sikeston, Missouri, while the Cape Girardeau County Commission appointed Mysie Keene of Jackson, both to third terms.
From West Park Mall to Town Plaza Shopping Center to downtown Cape Girardeau, shoppers are out in force on what is traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year; their numbers dispel some of the ominous threats that have loomed on the economic front the past few weeks.
DEXTER, Mo. -- Marshal Craig of Sikeston, Missouri, judge of the 33rd Judicial Circuit, was elected president of the Southeast Missouri Boy Scouts Council at its annual meeting here last night; Craig has been active in Scouting since 1941, serving in many capacities.
That turkey, the centerpiece of most Thanksgiving Day dinners, will cost a bit more this year; a price 2 cents higher per pound than last year, however, isn't deterring area housewives, as they continue buying up the big birds more briskly than they did last year.
The formation of a voluntary committee to work in harmony with all agencies in securing a site for the new post office building is underway; the committee will work to preserve and improve the Courthouse Park, as well as the courthouse itself and the public library.
Entries are being received from artists who wish to take part in National Art Week; an exhibition will be held in Cape Girardeau next week in the ground floor corner room in the Hotel Marquette building; Dorothy Seabaugh is in charge of the showing here, which will include paintings, carvings and weaving.
Several farmers in New Madrid County, having been threatened with bodily harm by night riders, banded together and hired three detectives to rid themselves of the threats; this results in a pitched battled this morning between 15 or 20 night riders and the detectives near Clarkton, Missouri; two of the detectives were slightly wounded, but six of the prowlers are arrested; several other miscreants are believed to have been wounded.
James W. Varner, for more than 25 years the agent in Cape Girardeau for Pierce Oil Co., leaves for Hannibal, Missouri, where he has taken the position of general salesman for the same company in the new territory.
