The Missouri Division of Employment Security office in Cape Girardeau has made special arrangements to expedite handling of a heavy workload expected as a result of federal emergency unemployment compensation legislation being passed by Congress; the Cape Girardeau office is extending its hours in an effort to handle an expected rush of unemployed workers applying for benefits.

John E. Fidler, a former chief executive officer at medical facilities in California and Florida, has been named the new president of Saint Francis Medical Center.

Mrs. Earl S. Mackey is named Cape Girardeau's Outstanding Young Woman of the Year and Mrs. Stanley K. Beggs receives the honor for Jackson at teas held at First Baptist Church here and the Community Room of the Jackson Public Library; the contests ares sponsored by the Cape Girardeau and Jackson Jaycee Wives.

Cape Girardeau's once-a-year art gallery, The Missourian's office, is crammed with the creative works of scores of area artists; the two-day show opens this evening for the 20th renewal of the newspaper's art exhibition.

Professor B.F. Johnson, 77, for 44 years associated with the department of mathematics at the Teachers College, until his retirement early in January, died last night at Southeast Missouri Hospital; he is survived by his widow, the former Carrie Woodburn, and two daughters, a brother and a sister.

F. Humphrey W. Woolrych, a distinguished artist who spent most of his life in St. Louis, died there Monday at the age of 77; one of his fine paintings hangs in the Alvarado station in Cape Girardeau and depicts Cape Rock as it would have appeared to Girardot and Lorimier.

The home of Henry Behringer, 936 S. Fountain St., is destroyed by fire shortly after midnight, after a blaze had been extinguished in the house at an earlier hour; most of the household goods are destroyed, only a few pieces being saved.

The local Council of Knights of Columbus holds one of its largest class initiations at its club rooms in the Sturdivant Bank building, attended by hundreds of Knights from Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area; 60 applicants are initiated.
