The 1991 SEMO District Fair posted a profit of $53,000, but that profit excludes the cost of pre-fair improvements the fair association paid for at Arena Park. The improvements cost about $32,000, making for a final profit of $21,000.

BENTON, Mo. -- Fielding Potashnick, a Sikeston, Missouri, attorney since 1959, has been named Division III Scott County associate circuit judge by Gov. John Ashcroft. He replaces Lewis M. Blanton.

A total of $84,820.46 in pledges has been received on the goal of $100,000 for the purchase of the 1,100-acre campsite in Wayne County, Missouri, members of the Otahki Area Girl Scout Council were told at their annual meeting last night.

The cause of yesterday's fatal Jackson school-bus crash was a combination of a freak brake failure and the zigzagging county road north of Jackson, where the accident took place. Assistant superintendent of the Jackson R-2 School District, J. Allen Birk, says the school bus driver did everything possible to avoid the wreck.

1941

The city of Cape Girardeau has filed with the federal government a $5,000 performance bond, guaranteeing it will remove the Common Pleas Courthouse to clear the site in Courthouse Park where the post-office department proposes to construct a $430,000 federal building. The city is to start the razing within 30 days after the government gives notice it is ready to start the job.

Eighteen additional sheep have been purchased for Cape Girardeau by Commissioner R.E. Beckman, bringing to 38 the flock in the city park on U.S. 61. The sheep are used to keep the park's grass clipped.

1916

The Democrats staged a "rub it in" parade and meeting last night. Because of the cold weather and slippery pavement, the parade was held with difficulty. While the band was unable to play, there was a big crowd ready to carry the torches, and at least 500 men, women and boys made up the parade. Because of the cold, it was decided to dispense with the speech-making.

Contractor Herman Pape in the morning breaks ground on Sprigg Street, just a few feet north of Broadway, for the new bakery to be built by Bauer Brothers. The new building will be 55 by 60 feet in dimension, one story high, and will cost about $5,000. Bauer's bake room recently was ruined by fire, and it then was decided to construct a modern brick building, replacing the old structures that were frame and dilapidated.
