The first federal grand jury to serve Southeast Missouri will be impaneled early next year, says U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh; unlike state grand juries, which often are called to investigate specific problems, federal grand juries are essential to federal law enforcement because they are the only way criminal indictments can be handed down.
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson took the first step yesterday toward an analysis of federal office-space needs for Cape Girardeau, asking the House Public Works Committee's subcommittee on public buildings and grounds to authorize such a study.

At the adjourned meeting from last week, the Cape Girardeau City Council last night approved the plans for the beautifying of Fairground Park and ordered a warrant drawn for $390 in favor of Muskopf & Irish, landscape gardeners of St. Louis, in payment for the plans.
