1987

About 40 truckloads of dirt are being piled into the Show Me Center in preparation for this weekend's Coors Light Super Pull Nationals, a truck and tractor pull; last night, REO Speedwagon played a concert at the same venue; coming in December will be Barry Manilow and Alice Cooper.

Cape Girardeau firefighters were called to the Lone Star Cement plant last night after wooden scaffolding surrounding large dust collectors was ignited by heat from the cement-manufacturing process; the fire occurred about 250 feet above ground.

1962

John P. Bradshaw, Cape Girardeau attorney, is the principal speaker at an observance of Veterans Day at Houck Field House; the event is sponsored by the Joint Veterans Council; the celebration also includes a parade.

A delegation from Notre Dame High School appears before the Cape Girardeau Board of Education and renews its request to admit a number of Notre Dame boys to vocational classes at Central High School; the board tables the question.

1937

The old List dwelling at the northeast corner of Broadway and Lorimier Street is being razed to make room for a new building for the Harris Motor Co., which will be built next year; the house was built in 1888 by Dr. Adolph List and was modeled after a German castle.

Maj. Giboney Houck secures a city building permit to replace the Pollack Hide & Fur Co. building, which was razed by fire two weeks ago; the building will be constructed of stone concrete and brick, with an estimated cost of $2,000.

1912

The auction bidding of contracts by the Little River Drainage District begins late in the morning in the big room on the fifth floor of the H.-H. Building; because of the large number of contractors making bids, it may take several days before the board can announce the successful bidders.

The Cape Girardeau and Thebes Bridge Terminal Railroad is doing a good business these days, hauling a great deal of timber and lumber; the Leming & Tibbs mill is shipping three cars of lumber a day; the local cement plant ships out 10 cars of cement today, for delivery to different connections along the line.
