During a public hearing last night, several residents of William Street spoke against a plan to rezone the street from residential to commercial between Sprigg Street and Sheridan Drive; because of that opposition, several commissioners said they didn't see the need to change their current policy of dealing with requests for commercial uses on a case-by-case basis.

At last, Hawthorn School is initiated to its intended use in the morning, when about 200 wide-eyed youngsters, ages 5 to 12, report for classes at the gleaming new building on Hopper Road; six elementary classes and one kindergarten class will finish the school year -- four weeks remain -- at Hawthorn.

The Cape Girardeau County Court directs that a letter be written to the state auditor's office requesting that the county records be audited, covering the past four years; the court notes the county is going to second class form of government in 1967 and it thinks each office should be audited.

Everything is ready for the Cape Girardeau Day program tomorrow, an event that will begin at 7:15 a.m. and continue until midnight; nationally known entertainers and commentators will perform at Houck Field House and Stadium.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Dean W. Cooper, 21, of Lafayette, Indiana, is killed and Reed C. Owens, 26, of Praise, Kentucky, is slightly injured in a ground collision of their two Steerman primary training planes at an auxiliary landing field near Morley, Missouri; the men, both in the final weeks of their primary training course as student pilots in the Army Air Corps at the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics here, were making practice landings as a part of their training.

Instead of using the vacant lot on Frederick Street near the Roth Tobacco factory, the great tabernacle for the Eli J. Forsythe revival will be erected on the vacant lot at Pacific and Independence streets; Louis Houck gave his permission to build the tabernacle there; the lot is a big one and slopes gently to the Pacific Street side, making a natural amphitheater.

Myrtle Eagle, daughter of Mrs. G.J. Eagle of Cape Girardeau, has received her diploma and now is a graduate nurse; she has been studying at St. John's Hospital in St. Louis for the past three years.
