Memorial Day. Under bright skies, local residents and veterans salute the nation's war dead; memorial observances are held in Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City; speaking at the observance at Cape Girardeau County Park, sponsored by the Joint Veterans Council of Cape Girardeau, is retired Col. Ian Sutherland.

Eight years after its formation, the Major Case Squad of Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties appears to have proven its strength as a tool for investigating homicides; of the five homicides the squad has investigated, four have ended in convictions; prosecution of the fifth is pending.

1966

Convention delegates of the Missouri Branch of the National Association of Postal Supervisors, meeting here, hold their first business sessions and are taken on a tour of Cape Girardeau in the afternoon; Russell Fowler, Cape Girardeau assistant postmaster, said 124 people are registered for the state convention.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Eagle Board of Revue of the Southeast Missouri Council yesterday approved 11 Boy Scouts for advancement to the rank of Eagle Scout; of those boys, only one, James Lottes, is from Cape Girardeau.

1941

The Jackson Chamber of Commerce has endorsed a proposal by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to erect an ornamental gate at the entrance to the old Jackson city cemetery; the gate will cost more than $500; the city is expected to contribute $350 to the cost of the gate.

The traffic bridge here, although assessed for tax purposes as a public utility, doesn't pay the city a license fee as do the Missouri Utilities Co. and Southeast Missouri Telephone Co.; Mayor Hinkle Statler explains this is because the bridge does an interstate business; the utilities and telephone companies sell services directly to the city and to customers here.

1916

The opening of the commencement exercises at the Normal School begins in the evening when president and Mrs. W.S. Dearmont entertain the senior class and members of the faculty at the Normal hall; tomorrow morning, the Rev. Eugene F. Abbott, D.D., of Fulton (Missouri) Presbyterian Church, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at the Normal auditorium.

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Despite the efforts of the Cape Girardeau delegates to bring next year's meeting there, the Southeast Missouri Drummers Association convention of 1917 will take place in De Soto, Missouri.
