The new Mildenberger & Willing (M&W) Packing Inc. plant north of Cape Girardeau was dedicated yesterday. Dieter Mildenberger, founder and president of the Gronau, Germany, company, was here for the ceremony.
While the wet weather in April and the first part of May spoiled many weekend outdoor activities, it's having a much more serious impact on area farmers. The unusually warm and humid weather is causing serious damage to this year's wheat crop and delaying planting of corn and soybeans because of wet fields.
Six Stearman biplanes winged their way over Cape Girardeau yesterday morning. The pilots were sprayer operators who assembled at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport for a three-day flight to Canada, where they have pooled to contract with the Canadian government to spray thousands of acres of timberland threatened by the spruce bud worm. Two of the flyers were from Sikeston, Missouri, and one was from Gideon, Missouri. The others were from Florida and Mississippi.
The Cape Girardeau County Court decides to improve a road leading north from Lake Girardeau to Crump and branches west into Bollinger County. Bollinger County is improving its part of the road to improve access to Lake Girardeau.
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Editors and newspaper people who are members of the Southeast Missouri Press Association, one of the largest press groups in the state, meet in Perryville for the annual program of addresses, business and feasting. Dean Frank J. Martin of the Missouri School of Journalism is one of the day's speakers.
Cape Girardeau's 3,200 public school pupils wind up the school year and prepare to launch their summer vacation. The city again is hosting a summer recreation program, directed by coach Louis Muegge. Frieda Rieck and William A. Shivelbine will combine to offer musical training to interested youths.
As a fund raiser for the public library and reading room, the library board of managers is offering an excursion on the steamer Cape Girardeau tomorrow evening. The board hasn't sufficient funds to meet the expenses for the coming month. If a large number can be induced to attend this excursion, sufficient money will be derived to keep the library open for several months.
The special election for the purpose of voting $15,000 with which to buy firefighting equipment carries, 595 to 268. The vote this time is nearly double that of the last election, when only 466 votes were cast, and the proposition lost by three votes.
