1991

The congregation of St. Mark Lutheran Church celebrates 25 years of ministry in Cape Girardeau; organized in May 1966 under the leadership of the Rev. Max Sullivan, the congregation has grown to more than 300 members.

Two houses, one a new structure and the other an existing residence that was renovated extensively, are dedicated in the afternoon by the Cape Girardeau chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The renovated house is at 545 S. Hanover St., while the new structure is at 1024 Good Hope St.

1966

Patricia Lemonds, a member of the Red Star Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau, has been invited to enter training as a Southern Baptist missionary journeyman; she then expects to spend two years teaching English and mathematics in a Baptist secondary school on the Sanyati Reserve in Rhodesia.

The Walther League of Eisleben Lutheran Church of Illmo celebrates its 50th anniversary. Guest speaker at the morning service is Vicar James Knuth from St. Paul Lutheran Church at Jackson; in the evening, George Hilpert of Gordonville speaks at the anniversary banquet.

1941

Edward Hanlon, district director of the National Youth Administration, announces two fabricated $75,000 machine shops, employing from 100 to 300 youths each, have been listed for this area as part of the national defense program. One of the shops will be placed in the Lead Belt section; the other is to go into production in the southern half of the district. Portageville, New Madrid, Sikeston and Poplar Bluff, Missouri, are all being considered for the program.

Dr. Harry M. Gage, president-elect of Lindenwood College at St. Charles, Missouri, is the keynote speaker at commencement exercises at the Teachers College; 160 graduates receive their diplomas.

1916

ROCKVIEW, Mo. -- Patrons of the Rockview school district met a week ago and voted a loan of $2,500 to build two new school houses. This is probably the only country district in the state where two school houses for white children are maintained. One of the new schools will be built on a lot a short distance north of J.W. Smith's store in Rockview; the other site is near the crossing of the Chaffee-Kelso and Benton-New Hamburg roads.

In an effort to save picturesque Cape Rock, real estate agents Lee and Arthur Bowman plan to sell at least 50 acres in that neighborhood to a country-club corporation. About this tract will be residential lots. Through the entire property will wind ornamental roads, and there will be numerous park places.
