JEFFERSON CITY -- Gov. Mel Carnahan and Democratic leaders in the Missouri House and Senate praise the accomplishments of the 1994 legislative session that adjourned last night, even though a health-care reform bill that was a focal point of their agenda failed to win approval; Carnahan blasts insurance lobbyists for "distorting facts," which killed the reform bill.

The April election remains unfinished business for county election officials throughout Missouri who are gearing up for a recount of ballots on the statewide gambling measure; proponents of a riverboat gambling amendment, which was narrowly defeated in April, requested a recount.

1969

The State College Board of Regents has voted to take construction bids to enclose the area beneath the Towers Dining Hall, making that space available as an auxiliary dining hall and snack bar; the new area will serve the 1,500 students living in the four high-rise dormitories.

Katy Industries, parent company of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, has expressed an interest in acquiring Ralph Edwards Sportswear Co., here and has approached the Cape Girardeau concern, but no agreement has been made.

The Rev. W.A. Humphreys, superannuated Methodist minister residing in Cape Girardeau, celebrates his 50th anniversary as a minister; appropriately, the celebration is held at the Methodist Church at Charleston, Missouri, the congregation that licensed Humphreys to preach May 14, 1894.

The executive board of the Cape Girardeau Baptist Association at a recent meeting voted to give assistance to members of the County Line Baptist Church, in the western part of the county, who are erecting a new frame house of worship; financial assistance will be sought for the new church among members of other congregations.

1919

Alois Barenkamp, a member of the Cape Girardeau baseball team, spent the latter part of last week in St. Louis taking in a few baseball games among other amusements; he reports big Elam Vangilder is still with the Browns and has a fine chance of sticking with the big leaguers for the whole season.

Dr. George Dorris, a prominent physician of Illmo, and Anna Sander of the same city are married at the Idan-ha Hotel in Cape Girardeau in the afternoon, the Rev. W.B. Halberstadt of Centenary Methodist Church officiating; the new Mrs. Dorris is a member of one of the best-known families of Illmo and a social favorite.
