The congregation of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has completed the purchase of property from David and Jerrie Gerlach in the Randol Farms Subdivision, west of Woodland Hills Estates on Abbey Street; the church is looking forward to the construction of a new building.
A new, 18-hole, miniature golf course has opened in Cape Girardeau; the new facility is part of the Southeast Discount Golf & Sporting Goods complex, which includes a golf driving range, batting cages and a golf equipment and supplies retail outlet.
A committee of Cape Girardeau residents has been named to consult with the St. Louis architectural firm designing the new Federal Building: Mrs. W.E. Davis, Rush H. Limbaugh, Dr. Mark F. Scully, Mrs. Jack O. Knehans, Jack L. Oliver, Narvol A. Randol, Lindsay W. Simmons, J.W. Gerhardt, Helen Bedford and Mrs. R.E.L. Lamkin Jr.
County Collector Bill W. Rose says he has closed his Cape Girardeau office as the result of the governor's veto of a bill to require it to be maintained; Gov. Warren E. Hearnes said the extra compensation the bill would allow the collector to earn would be "excessive and unfair to the taxpayers of Cape Girardeau."
The Capahas dropped their opening baseball game of the season to the Murphysboro, Illinois, Red Wings, 7-2, at Fairground Park yesterday; manager Marvin Gockel used his entire squad of 16, including three pitchers; Elam Vangilder started and hurled three frames, was followed by J.T. Cotner, and Lou Weiss finished the game.
All is ready for the arrival of Gen. Evangeline Booth, who will speak tomorrow evening at the Arena Building; commissioner Ray Beckman has arranged seating for 3,500 people at the Arena, using chairs and park benches on the main floor; members of the American Legion will serve as ushers.
Now that the Knights of Columbus state convention is over, the Commercial Club is preparing for the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, who will begin arriving Monday night for a three-day session that begins Tuesday.
John Watson, the well-known schoolteacher and horse trainer, is preparing for a trip to the San Francisco fair and other points in the West; he will spend one month on the way to California, one month at the fair and one month on his return trip.
