It's literally a "banner day" for Southeast Missouri State University at the commencement ceremony in the Show Me Center; astronaut Linda Godwin, a 1974 graduate of Southeast, receives a standing ovation when she is introduced to the crowd of about 8,000; she returns to the university a specially commissioned banner that flew with her aboard the space shuttle Atlantis last month.
Six members of the Air Force ROTC program at Southeast Missouri State University are commissioned as officers during a ceremony at Rose Theater: Enoch V. Norwood, Kimberlee P. Joos, Michael L. Goodin, Shannon M. Cape, Phillip A. Callahan and David S. Brown.
Dr. Bower Aly and Gustav B. Margraf, alumni of State College, will be presented the Alumni Award of Merit by the school's Alumni Association at commencement exercises May 29; Aly -- scholar, author and former editor of "The Quarterly Journal of Speech" -- will give the commencement address; Margraf is policy director and supervisor of British Aluminum's overseas operations and resides in London; Aly is chairman of the University of Hawaii Department of Speech.
The Jackson School Board has hired the architectural firm of Hanner and Brietweiser of Chester, Illinois, to design the proposed elementary school addition.
For the first time in many years, services aren't held at Maple Avenue Methodist Church; the old church building, a frame structure, is being moved from its location to a new foundation constructed just north of it; the building has been moved about half-way between the old and new foundations; after construction of a new edifice at the site of the old church, the former church building will house activities of the congregation.
The Teachers College Indians track and field squad returns from Kirksville, Missouri, where it won its seventh straight MIAA Conference outdoor meet yesterday, scoring 95.7 points; it was the Braves' seventh straight victory of the season and the 20th since they last tasted defeat at the hands of the Carbondale (Illinois) Teachers in 1939.
A small advertisement on the back page of a St. Louis newspaper published yesterday asking for information about successful hotel men who have money to invest in a hotel proposition at Cape Girardeau brought to light the fact a movement is afoot to give the city a modern hotel of considerable size on Broadway.
The Women's Council has called a mass meeting for this evening to discuss the bringing of a Carnegie or public library to Cape Girardeau.
