Work could begin Tuesday on a 320-foot-long, 14-foot-tall mural along the Mississippi River floodwall here; more than half of the funding is in place for the $16,000 project; that goal could be reached if the Cape Girardeau City Council approves a recommendation made by the Convention and Visitors Bureau for the city to contribute $7,000 to the project.

Workers are putting the finishing touches on the new council chambers at Cape Girardeau City Hall; the new chamber, which replaced the former gymnasium, almost doubles the space of the council's chamber; it also will house the municipal court.

1966

It's Charter Sunday at St. Mark Lutheran Mission; according to the Rev. Max D. Sullivan, pastor, each adult signing the petition is petitioning the Board of American Missions and the Illinois Synod of the Lutheran Church in America to become a duly-organized congregation of the Illinois Synod.

State College Greek organizations filled Saturday with hard work, afternoon games and an evening dance; more than 700 people attended the Sigma Chi Fraternity Derby Day contests at Capaha Park.

1941

The Fornfelt Board of Education, at a special meeting last night, rescinded action taken at an earlier session and re-elected L.L. Schuette as principal of the high school; the board's action followed a three-day strike of the high-school student body.

Sale of the new United State defense saving bonds and postal saving stamps is inaugurated at the Cape Girardeau post office; banks also are being supplied with the issues; T.J Juden, Cape Girardeau's World War postmaster, who at the time bought the first Liberty Bond in the community, purchases the first defense savings bond today, buying a $100 one.

1916

Cape Girardeau city counselor Oscar Knehans said he has prepared the ordinance for the extension of the city limits; the present city limits were established by an act of the Missouri Legislature in 1872 and have stood without change; cities of the third class, however, may expand those lines when a majority of voters favor such extensions.

Something will have to be done soon if that wonderful woodland park site around Cape Rock, a mile north of Cape Girardeau, is to be saved for posterity; St. Vincent's College, which owns the land, has given Bowman Brothers, real estate dealers, orders to subdivide the north college farm and sell it in parcels of any description that will cause quick sales and the requisite amount of money to be raised.
