THEBES, Ill. -- A river near flood stage, strong currents and brisk winds are bing blamed for two barge accidents that closed the Mississippi River channel for several hours both Saturday and Sunday; two towboats, each pushing more than 20 barges, struck the Thebes railroad bridge in separate accidents, dislodging several barges and sinking two.
Citing a lack of confidence and common philosophy between himself and members of the board, Allan Maki resigns as executive director of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority; the seven board members present at the monthly meeting make no comment about Maki's resignation, which is immediately accepted.
Two Cape Girardeau firemen have been promoted to the rank of captain: Eugene J. Hindman, 28, and Ronald L. Moss, 25; their promotions are retroactive to March 1; the promotions were made to fill two vacancies made by a resignation and a promotion.

In answer to many appeals for another presentation of yesterday's brilliant program by the Cape Girardeau Symphony Orchestra, director Frieda Rieck announces the concert will be repeated at the chapel hour at Teachers College Wednesday morning; many had suggested the concert be repeated Easter Sunday afternoon, but by then more of the musicians will be in service of their country.
The aurora borealis last night, shining in glorious colors in the north, caused much wonder and awe in Cape Girardeau; the hundreds of people leaving the Normal School building after the Julius Lincoln lecture witnessed the brilliant spectacle.
