JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau City Councilman Hugh White yesterday filed for the Democratic nomination for the 27th District Senate seat; White is the underdog in the race, facing Sikeston, Missouri, Mayor Bill Burch and former state representative Betty Hearnes of Charleston, Missouri.

Toys R Us is coming to Cape Girardeau, but Michael Miller, who is with the company's real-estate division, isn't confirming a site for the store. The company is advertising for store managers.

Ten promotions in the Cape Girardeau Police Department, including two to captain, are announced as part of a general department reorganization. Advanced to captain are Lt. Glenn W. Volkerding as shift commander and Lt. Shannon W. Kelley as chief of the detectives division; new lieutenants are William G. Wilson, Robert E. Gass, Donald R. Roberts and William W. Stover; new sergeants are Danny E. Clubb, Eugene J. Gessert, Oran D. Harmon and Robert F. Ross.

Lumber dealers and their wives from parts of five states begin arriving in Cape Girardeau to attend the 59th annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Retail Lumber Dealers Association.

Cape Girardeau public school teachers went back to school yesterday, as they learned the ins and outs of the sugar-rationing program, which they will administer. Each consumer is permitted to own two pounds of sugar at the time of his registration without losing a stamp from his book; for the next four pounds on hand for each person, stamps will be removed at a rate of one stamp per pound.

A new government order regulating cuffs on men's suits containing wool goes into effect. Cape Girardeau merchants have been experiencing the biggest week on the sale of men's suits in their history; more than 300 men's suits were purchased from five clothing retailers in Cape Girardeau on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Today, the purchaser of a suit that contains any wool will get trousers without cuffs.

1917

Cape Girardeau voters will choose from two complete tickets and several partial tickets at Tuesday's municipal election; Mayor F.A. Kage is heading both the Citizens and People's tickets; his only competition appears to be Will Hirsch on the Hirsch Ticket; other tickets -- Progressive and Independent -- have no mayoral candidates.

It is rumored the government is closely watching certain pro-German sympathizers in Cape Girardeau and is ready to pounce on them the moment war is declared.
