Public Works Director Guy Lowes has resigned to take a position as deputy director of public works, utilities and engineering in Hallandale, Florida.
The City Council will consider a park-tax proposal recommended by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board when it meets Monday. The park board has recommended the council hold a special election June 5 on whether to adopt a 25-cent property tax levy; the revenue would be used to pay off bonds to fund construction of a softball and soccer complex at Shawnee Park and a swimming-pool facility at Capaha Park.
A St. Louis contractor was the low bidder for the construction of two 12-story dormitories and a companion dining center of the State College campus, but the price is about $500,000 in excess of the amount the college has to spend. McCarthy Brothers Construction Co., in association with the J.E. Hatman Construction Co., submitted a base price for the project at $3,632,168.
CAIRO, Ill. -- Test borings for the Interstate 57 bridge linking Illinois and Missouri at Future City, Illinois, immediately north of Cairo, are being made by the firm of Alfred Benesch and Associates.
Eric Reith of Shawneetown preaches his first sermon at the Smelterville Lutheran mission. Reith, a student pastor who has been living at Shawneetown with his brother-in-law and sister, the Rev and Mrs. Walter Stuenkel, takes the place of the Rev. Gary E. Germann at the mission.
Max Blitstein, owner of Cape Cut Rate drug store, is making plans to move the store from the Hotel Marquette building to 31 N. Main St., as soon as those quarters are vacated by the Stylerite, a woman's clothing store.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey C. Jones are preparing to move from Cape Girardeau to Memphis. Since disposing of his store on Lower Broadway, Jones has been working for H.C. Wasem in Haarig but will leave within the next few days for Memphis, where he will likely enter business for himself.
Capt. and Mrs. R.G. Rutherford, who recently returned to the United States from the Philippine Islands, where they had been the past few years, arrived last night for a visit with Mrs. Rutherford's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Whitelaw.
