Students are putting the finishing touches on their exhibits for the 43rd annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair. The fair opens tomorrow at the Show Me Center with an estimated 200 entries in the junior division and 60 in the senior division.
ANNA, Ill. -- A group of about 200 Anna-Jonesboro High School students launched a walkout last week in protest of teacher layoffs for the 1992-1993 school term; the high school's board of education recently approved budget cuts of about $290,000, which includes releasing seven teachers.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- H.G. Maxwell, the incumbent mayor, wants off the ballot, and his avowed opponent, R.H. Capshaw, wants on, but the ballot for the Chaffee city election carries just the opposite in the race regardless of their wishes; the official ballot goes to the printer today with Mayor Maxwell's name listed as unopposed for the office.

A telephone message from area headquarters in Fulton, Missouri, to superintendent E. Hoelscher of the Jackson CCC camp brings the order to close the camp by May 16. Camp No. 3772 was moved to the outskirts of Jackson two years ago and was occupied by approximately 200 World War veterans, who did soil conservation and reforestation work in the county.
Alexander County, Illinois, has abandoned its efforts to acquire the Mississippi River traffic bridge at Cape Girardeau; its board of commissioners, which started the negotiations last year, soon formally will notify the bond house representing it to drop all negotiations.

The A.H. Mueller Meat Market on Good Hope Street is being remodeled and will, within the next few days, be one of the most up-to-date shops in the city. New floors are being put in, the walls are being painted and new fixtures are being installed.
