CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Reece Brown, Chaffee's first city administrator, submitted his resignation last night at the Chaffee City Council's regular meeting, prompting Mayor Ron Moyers to form a committee to set up requirements to advertise for a new administrator. The resignation takes effect April 3.

Former sheriff John C. Crites said he still is studying the recently released audit report that shows him owing the county $1,939, but it appears he may not be obliged to pay back the entire amount.

Tongues are wagging for a good cause here today and tomorrow as the 33rd annual tournament sponsored by the Missouri Association of College and University Speech directors is being held at State College. More than 100 students from 16 schools participate in the debate contest.

1942

Purchase by the Consolidated School of Aviation Inc. of a 192-acre farm on Highway 74, just south of the city, from Barrett Cotner to be used as a site for maintaining and operating a flying school and general community airport was consummated late yesterday. Also at yesterday's meeting of the school's board of directors, members put in $35,000 more operating capital, bringing the total operating capitalization to $55,000.

With new typewriters tied up by a federal order freezing sale of the machines, there is a brisk trading here in used typewriters. The buying and selling of typewriters is expected to simmer down in the near future, since used units will be hard to obtain. Numerous offices are securing the machines they expect to use for the duration of the war.

1917

The Daily Republican issues a "noon extra," informing its readers of a plot by Germany to influence Mexico to take part in hostilities against the United States. President Woodrow Wilson has asked the Senate to authorize the arming of American merchant ships, drawing the country closer to war with Germany.

Albert Bond Lambert, president of the Aero Club of America in St. Louis, tells A.M. Tinsley and Fred A. Groves he will be in Cape Girardeau on Monday or Tuesday to confer with them about the establishment of an aviation school here.
