The search for a new president of Southeast Missouri State University ends with the announcement that Dr. Kala M. Stroup, 52, will assume that post in July; Stroup, a consultant with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in Washington, D.C., formerly was president of Murray State University at Murray, Kentucky.

Robert A. Dempster, founding president of the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation, was honored last night on his retirement from the Foundation's Board of Directors; the surprise dinner was attended by 200 persons.

1965

Prosecuting Attorney Bill D. Burlison voices opposition to pending legislation that would prevent Cape Girardeau County from becoming a second-class county in 1967; the legislation would raise the assessed valuation level necessary to become a second-class county to $110,000,000.

The office of the Cape Girardeau County collector in the Common Pleas Courthouse, the center of controversy last spring, has become a point of contention again; the issue this time is over pending legislation and the amount of money the collector would earn if it passes; the bill, introduced by Rep. Marvin E. Proffer of Jackson, would require that the collector maintain a branch office in the Common Pleas Courthouse.

Evangelistic campaigns are to be started shortly in all of the Methodist churches of the Cape Girardeau district; these campaigns are an annual pre-Easter feature for the Methodists.

Dan McCoy Jr., 33, a Sikeston, Missouri, business man and student pilot, is critically injured, when his airplane goes into a tailspin at a height of approximately 400 feet and crashes to the ground 20 feet from a dwelling at the airport east of Sikeston around 4 p.m.

Dr. G.B. Schulz has withdrawn from the race for Cape Girardeau mayor; remaining in the race are J.W. Phillips and the incumbent, Fred Kage.

A baseball team of nine Jackson High School lads will be chosen from among these hopefuls: Alvin Dickmann, William Robertson, Henry Mueller, Dick Clippard, Jack Beard, Owen Macke, John Mabrey, Henry Illers, Desey Talley, Henry Kirstner, Sam Lail, Lynn Nevins, Jim Snider, Walter Kasten, Pearl Stovall, and Morrison Williams
