Tracy Mehan, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, praised local officials' historic preservation efforts and the city's designation as a certified local government yesterday. Mehan said Cape Girardeau is one of only 16 Missouri cities to receive the certified local government distinction.
A statewide, fire service mutual-aid pact -- created last fall during a Cape Girardeau emergency preparedness conference -- was activated Wednesday to help fight a series of major wildfires near Potosi, Missouri. Firefighters and firefighting equipment from the Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Cape Girardeau County rural fire departments responded to the call.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Tom Hope, on behalf of the Chaffee Chamber of Commerce, has requested the city of Chaffee provide fire protection for the industrial park development area of Cape Girardeau. The area is within the nine-mile radius of Chaffee.

ORAN, Mo. -- Meeting here yesterday, representatives of Chaffee, Missouri, and Oran formed the Straight Route Association. The group hopes to prevent any change in the location of the proposed military highway between Jackson and Morley, Missouri, over highways 25 and 55A to another route over Highway 61 by way of Cape Girardeau.
A new scale of city licenses for petroleum bulk plants within Cape Girardeau, with the annual permits to range from $100 to $800 each, was put into the licensing ordinance yesterday by the City Council. The former ordinance section fixed the license for a bulk station, regardless of size, at $300 annually.
The steamer Cape Girardeau brings down five automobiles on its morning trip that are probably the finest bunch of cars ever brought here on a single trip. Among them are three big Marmons, one Packard and one Hudson. The three Marmons are for Sikeston, Missouri, people; the Packard belongs to Paul B. Moore of Charleston, Missouri; and the Hudson is for Al Salsgeber, the local agent.
The brick work on the C.E. Mayer building on Independence Street is finished in the morning, and workers begin at once to put the roof on.
