TCI Cablevision of Missouri, which provides cable television service to Cape Girardeau and Jackson, will increase its basic cable rate May 1; the company will increase its monthly basic cable service from $16.50 to $17.95, an 8.8 percent hike; a $2 monthly charge for converter rental will also be added.
JEFFERSON CITY -- One more Democrat has entered the race for 8th District congressman; the most recent to file for Congress is Francis Brokow, a Sullivan, Missouri, truck driver; he'll face Rolla, Missouri, attorney Russ Carnahan and Cape Girardeau businessman Thad Bullock in the August primary.
A group of Cape Girardeau Jaycees worked yesterday along Highway 61 between this city and Jackson, preparing rose beds for new plants; the Jaycees have undertaken a project to renovate the once-famous Ten-Mile Garden.
In the absence of Dr. W.T. Holland, who is conducting a revival meeting at Charleston, Missouri, the pulpit at First Baptist Church is filled by Dr. Noel Taylor, executive secretary of the Illinois Baptist State Association since 1946.
W.R. Thornton of Clarksdale, Mississippi, arrives in Cape Girardeau to take over the position of manager of the local F.W. Woolworth store, 1 N. Main St; he succeeds P.F. Weibel, who has been here nearly four years and has been transferred to a store at Waco, Texas.
Plans have been completed and construction will begin within the next few days on a modernistic circular type restaurant building in the 2200 block of West Broadway for G.M. Campbell; Campbell recently purchased the property from Martin Krueger; the building, to be stucco and have glass sides, will be 36 feet in diameter; the restaurant will feature curb service and club breakfasts.
Palm Sunday is celebrated at churches in Cape Girardeau. Confirmation services are held at the morning worship service at Trinity Lutheran Church in the German and English languages; the class is one of the largest for a number of years, with 26 children being confirmed.
Every Saturday afternoon, George Laney preaches on the streets of Jackson, attracting listeners by his picturesque appearance, his haggard face and eyes full of fanatical fire; Laney came here several years ago; he claims to be a Seventh Day Adventist, and proclaims his doctrine with a shrill voice at opportune and inopportune times and places.
