Farmers in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois need about two weeks of dry weather before they can get into wet winter-wheat fields and prepare other fields for corn planting. Since the first of the year, 15.26 inches of precipitation, mostly rain, have fallen at the Cape Girardeau airport.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The Chaffee Hospital Development Corp., which assumed operation of the hospital here in January, has hired a local management team to oversee operation of the 42-bed facility. Medi-Concepts Services Group, composed of four area persons, is running the hospital.
The Cape Girardeau City Council may modify its annexation proposal to substantially lessen the amount of territory the city would take to the north; under the present plan, the city would annex northward for about a mile to attach an entire tier of sections from Wedekind Park to the Mississippi River. The scope of the proposal has drawn opposition from the residents of the rural school district.
A four-man Central High School debating team returned to Cape Girardeau with the championship trophy from Southeast Debate Conference, held in Charleston, Missouri, last week. The champion debaters are Bill Wilson, Patrick Summers, Mike Seabaugh and Kenneth Steinhoff.
The Lions Club fed approximately 10,875 pancakes to 1,633 persons yesterday to chalk up the most successful of the two annual events sponsored to provide milk during the coming school year for needy school children.
Applications of the Potashnick Truck Service to operate its vehicles over the sector of Highway 25 between Jackson and Festus, Missouri, and to give intrastate trucking service over a regular route between Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff, Missouri, have been granted by the Missouri Public Service Commission.
The Commercial Club has called a meeting for Tuesday to discuss train service in Cape Girardeau. Recently, orders were issued by the management of the Frisco Railroad to lay off all carpenters and a large percentage of the track men, bridge men and others and to abolish certain trains.
Rebeccah Houck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Houck, marries Army Lt. Patrick Frissell in the morning at Elmwood, the country home of her parents. Immediately after the ceremony, they leave by motor for Illmo, where they board a Cotton Belt train that takes them to Texas, where Frissell is stationed.
