More than 250 youngsters scrambled for Easter eggs yesterday morning during the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department's annual Easter egg hunt at Capaha Park.

Jackson lawyer John Lichtenegger has been chosen by Gov. John Ashcroft to represent the 8th Congressional District Republicans on the Missouri House Redistricting Committee; Mel Weems of Bonne Terre, Missouri, was appointed by the governor to represent the Democratic Party on the panel from the 8th District.

1966

The Cape Girardeau City Council has named members of the plumber licensing board: L.L. Welker and Dewey G. Larmie for three years; Bentley Ramsey and Clyde E. Clippard for two years; and Paul Landgraf and N.F. Eaton Jr. for one year.

The Jackson City Council, in a hurriedly-called evening meeting, rejects an eleventh-hour plea by the Jackson Chamber of Commerce to save the old Oliver house by purchasing it, but works out a compromise that saves the house for at least six months; the old Oliver home, on East Adams near the Evangelical Church, is the home in which state Sen. and Mrs. R.B. Oliver lived many years.

1941

Members of the River Hills Garden Club planted 43 hawthorn trees Saturday afternoon along Cape Rock Drive, just northwest of the city limits; thus far the club has been responsible for planting 67 hawthorns along the drive and in city parks.

A permit for a 13-room stone dwelling is taken out at the office of city engineer John Walther by Eddie Erlbacher; the residence will be built on the east side of West End Boulevard, at Highland Drive; the house, designed by St. Louis architect Bernard McMahon, will cost $15,000; Erlbacher is a builder of river craft, including diesel-powered boats.

1916

Otis Goza, until a few months ago a liveryman in Cape Girardeau, is here for several hours between trains on his way to his ranch at Luxora, Arkansas, from Advance, Missouri, where he disposed of his farm for $8,000 to H.A. Bollinger of Advance.

Lt. Col. W.L. Mabrey is to organize a battalion of infantry in Southeast Missouri under the supervision of Gen. Clark; it's likely Mabrey will start his work of organizing a company in Jackson.
