BENTON, Mo. -- Union Electric Co. has filed a petition for a declaratory judgment in Scott County Circuit Court to clarify the powers of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority to provide electrical energy to tenants at the port.
Otto F. Dingeldein, a well-known silversmith and supporter of the arts, died yesterday at age 84. Dingeldein's life centered on advancement of the arts, through his own craft and by generating community interest in all the arts. He founded the Christian Arts Council here in 1963, which evolved into the Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts.
Ray B. Lucas, former Scott County attorney and Cape Girardeau resident who gained prominence as a Missouri Supreme Court judge, as state insurance director and in business, died in a Phoenix hospital last night.
While most Cape Girardeau County offices have only one candidate so far, four hopefuls have filed for the First District seat on the County Court: Democrats Hubert Young, Garland Powell and A.H. Bender and Republican Herbert F. Brune.
Cape Girardeau County schools are allotted $92,176.81 as their final half-year sum of state aid; this includes $33,904.48 for the Cape Girardeau district and $12,945.06 for the district at Jackson.
Tillman Anderson, manager at the Cape Girardeau Horse and Mule Commission Co. on U.S. 61, is expecting a call from Maj. T.E. Whitehead of the Quartermaster's Corps in Kansas City. The major is interested in purchasing mules for Uncle Sam's Army but insisted in his letter to Anderson, "No gray mules wanted"; Anderson explained gray mules "stand out in battle like a pair of long handles flapping in the breeze on a dark winter night."
John M. Overstreet of Kansas City, Missouri, executive of the estate of the late Colonel Van Frank, says he is considering the probability of rebuilding the Riverview Hotel building, which was destroyed in last week's big fire. He should know in a month or so whether the place will be rebuilt. He carried only $15,000 on the hotel.
The Buckner-Ragsdale store, a victim of last week's conflagration, is open for business in Cape Girardeau. Buckner Ragsdale and R.E.L. Lamkin bought the stock of dry goods, shoes, furnishings, etc. from Houser & Caruthers, owners of a general store at the northeast corner of Main Street and Broadway, directly across from the burned-out structure, and took possession at once.
