1991

Some members of the Cape Girardeau Naval Reserve Center's Fleet Hospital Unit, which was called to Mideast duty Jan. 7, will be returning home this week; word has been received here that fleet hospital personnel are being deactivated.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education has approved the purchase of a new elementary reading series for children in kindergarten through sixth grade at an investment of about $90,000; three years of studying the matter preceded selection of the D.C. Heath and Company series.

1966

The 90th annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association -- attended by at least 4,500 educators -- adjourned here yesterday with the conclusion of the 22 departmental workshops.

Another county office race shapes up with the filing of George M. Jackson of Cape Girardeau for the Democratic nomination for County Court presiding judge; he will oppose the incumbent, Republican Clarence W. Suedekum, in November; neither man has opposition in the primary election so far.

1941

Drilling operations for an oil test have been started by the Deimund Oil Co. of Cape Girardeau on the Dodge farm just west of Commerce, Missouri; two full days of drilling have been put in so far, and the well is down 75 feet.

A report that Alexander County, just across the river in Illinois, may make an effort to acquire the traffic bridge over the Mississippi here, can't be verified; sources say the rumors may have originated in Cairo, Illinois; the bridge is owned by the Stranahan interests of Toledo, Ohio.

1916

Albert Poe, farmer, chicken expert, gardener and other interests, has consented to get into the race for Cape Girardeau City Council in the second ward.

Sgt. M. O'Rourke and Cpl. J. Turner arrived in Cape Girardeau yesterday on the southbound Frisco train; they will reopen the Army recruiting station here.
